Hybridity in Architecture
One of the architectural features that interested me most in Marseille, were the churches. Notre-Dame de la Garde and Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure stood out to me for their unique style and beauty. I was intrigued by Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure intricate domes and both of their unique dark and cream striped stone. Upon further research I found that the unique domes and stripes are of eastern christian tradition. Both posses Neo-Byzantine styles, not found in many churches in France. This use of Byzantine architecture reflects another aspect of hybridity in the city. It reflects again the strong connections between different regions of the Mediterranean and their influences.
